Case study

Training reflective teachers in Uganda

Kimanya Ngeyo Foundation for Science and Education is a non-profit organization that has been working in Uganda since 2007. Since their founding, they have been offering Fundaec’s Preparation for Social Action program-a non formal development education program that provides young people with the necessary skills and capabilities to become drivers of community well-being- to thousands of youth and young adults.

In 2015, Kimanya began using the PSA program for a year-long professional development training program for primary and secondary school teachers in Uganda. In the past nine years, more than 2,000 public and private school teachers have participated in this program, which has helped cultivate their capacities in planning, curriculum delivery, and relationship building with parents and communities. The positive influence of the study of these materials on the teachers is observed both in terms of classroom performance and interactions with the community, as well as in improvements to their students’ learning as observed in the increase from 51% to 75% pass rate on the Ugandan Primary Leaving Examination. This result places the program in the top five percent of all evaluated interventions in terms of learning-adjusted years of schooling per USD spent.

CRED is currently leading an action research project with FUNDAEC and Kimanya to:

  1. Highlight learnings from both FUNDAEC’s and Kimanya’s experience in training teachers with materials from Fundaec’s University Degree Teacher Training program
  2. Develop a new program with educational materials for the Ugandan teachers working with Kimanya, and
  3. Support Kimanya to train Ugandan teachers to participate actively in school-based efforts to transform food systems and become catalysts of processes of social change that translate the oneness of humankind into reality.
